The Importance of Professionalism When Applying to a Nanny Agency

A few months ago, I came across an inspiring post from my friend Tonya, the owner of Newborn Care Solutions and NCS Agency, discussing the importance of professionalism. Her words resonated with me, especially after recent experiences that lacked professionalism. It sparked an idea in me, and I thought, "This is the perfect topic for my next blog!" I'm excited to dive into it and share valuable insights with everyone as you apply for your next role.

FACEBOOK// When searching for your next position, naturally, Facebook is one of the first places you check. As you scroll through posts from local parents and nanny agencies, you come across a position that catches your eye. I want to walk you through the following steps — the ones that will truly help you stand out from others. After owning The Nanny Consultant for over 11 years, I can confidently say that these simple basics make a difference.
ASSESS THE POSITION// Please take the time to review the job ad carefully to see if it's the right match for you! It’s crucial to review the family's details, values, expectations, and qualifications for a caregiver. Understanding the agency's qualifications will not only save everyone time but also help you apply for positions that align with your skills, values, and schedule. Skipping to the end, where the rates and benefits are listed, is common and often the reason we receive the most questions. When you do this, you are missing out on the most valuable information, in my opinion.
FOLLOWING THE APPLICATION PROCESS// I can’t stress this enough – you will need to follow the application instructions in the post. If an agency is posting a job, the “how to apply” information is most often available. Most ads direct you to the agency’s website to complete an application; some may also ask you to email a résumé. Whatever the directions are, complete them fully. It’s the only way to make sure you are considered an applicant. We often receive several DM’s stating, “I am interested in the role you posted. How do I apply?” This happens even when I have the link to apply at the top and bottom of a listing. I am not active in my DM’s, and missing that crucial point could cost you the job. If you have already applied in the past, it is generally safe, at least at my agency, to send an email inquiring about the role.
APPLICATION// Once you’re on the agency’s application, answer every question as thoroughly as possible. Include clear, complete work history, exact dates you were employed, hours worked, ages of children at the start of the role, responsibilities, and reasons for leaving. Agency teams are busy, and providing complete details is essential; it ensures your application gets the attention it deserves and stands out positively in the selection process.
THINGS TO AVOID ON FACEBOOK// When engaging with your audience, steer clear of generic phrases like "Sent a DM," "DM me," or simply "Interested." These comments do little to showcase your unique qualities as a caregiver. Instead, seize this initial opportunity to truly illuminate your strengths and experiences. This is your chance to stand out and let your passion for caregiving shine through, making a memorable impression that sets you apart. Embrace this moment to highlight what makes you exceptional.
Often, these DMs end up in the other folder, and parents and agencies never see the message, or it gets buried. If you have follow-up questions for the company, please direct them to their website or email. Parents will often leave a way to get in touch as well. I want to highlight that in a DM, I often receive additional questions about a position, and due to the nature of the NDA we have signed, I can’t provide more information than is provided in the ad. Family privacy is of the utmost importance, and many specifics won’t be shared until the interview stage. At The Nanny Consultant, I strive to share as much information as possible, so you, as a caregiver, can confidently apply, knowing it may be a great fit.
Lastly, it is crucial to understand that using emojis in applications or while leaving comments throughout the application process is generally considered unprofessional. This includes all forms of written communication, such as emails, cover letters, and online application platforms. Maintaining a professional demeanor not only reflects your seriousness and respect for the opportunity but also sets the tone for how potential employers perceive your candidacy. Using clear, formal language ensures your intentions and qualifications are conveyed effectively and taken seriously in the competitive job application landscape.

Finding a position that resonates is exciting! Channel that energy into a standout application. Follow the directions in the ad, skip the DMs, and pay attention to detail on the application. These tips will undoubtedly help you stand out and make a lasting impression!
